While some make a point of stopping at the Pancake Rocks, I really don't see the point. Sure, if you have the time and inclination, go check them out if they are on your route, but they aren't anything special. Though I hear that the blowholes are much cooler at high tide, for which I wasn't there. The shape of the rocks is unique, though:

I took the
nakedbus from Nelson to Franz Josef, which left at 7:10am from just outside the iCenter in the center of town ($20). They stopped at several roadside cafes, a river view, and the Pancake Rocks for breaks.
