www.momondo.com: searches tons and tons of airlines and airtravel websites for the best price on any given route in the world. wikitravel.org: free travel guide for just about anywhere. It is being continuously added to and updated.
www.hostelworld.com: the ultimate hostel booking site. There are others like it, but it has better features and a better interface than the rest of them. A "gold card" for $10 gets you free booking and after a certain amount of use, you can accumulate points to renew the card for free or get other rewards.
www.tripadvisor.com: good info on the expensive things to do in a city. If money isn't an issue, this is where you should plan your trip. matadornights.com: a good site on nightlife and traveling.
www.blogger.com: google blogs, you'd be surprised at how good people are at sharing traveling info. To search them, go to google and type: Malaysia travel site:blogspot.com. Obviously, "Malaysia travel" can be substituted for just about anything, but to search google blogs specifically, you need to include site:blogspot.com
www.findacrew.net: ever wanted to sail the pacific/aegean/adriatic/ioaninnan/wherever for free? Then just help out.
Region specific:
www.db.de: the ultimate source for railway timetables in Europe. Unfortunately, the fares outside of Germany and Austria are not available though.
